Open-Back Soundstage

The open-back design allows air to flow through the earcup, creating a more natural, room-like soundstage. Instruments feel more naturally positioned and the sound is less fatiguing over long sessions. For mixing, the open-back presentation makes it easier to judge stereo width and depth.

250 Ohm Impedance

The DT 990 Pro 250Ω version requires a headphone amplifier to reach its full potential. Using it from a laptop socket will produce insufficient volume and less dynamic range. A dedicated headphone amp or high-quality interface headphone output is recommended.

Sound Character

The DT 990 Pro has a V-shaped frequency response with enhanced bass and a bright, airy top end. This makes it initially exciting and enjoyable, but the bright treble can be tiring over very long sessions.

Who Is It For?

Mixing engineers and critical listeners who need a wide, open soundstage. Not suitable for tracking where sound isolation is needed. Requires a headphone amplifier for best results.

Pros & Cons

✓ Pros

  • Wide, natural open-back soundstage
  • Excellent detail and separation
  • Comfortable velour ear pads
  • German build quality
  • Great for long mixing sessions

✕ Cons

  • 250 Ohm requires a headphone amplifier
  • Open-back leaks sound both ways
  • Not suitable for tracking/recording
  • Non-detachable cable
  • Bright high-end can be tiring

Verdict

The Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro is an excellent open-back headphone for mixing and critical listening. The wide soundstage and detailed sound make it a pleasure to work on. The 250Ω impedance requires an amplifier, and the open design leaks sound. But for mixing sessions in a quiet studio environment, the DT 990 Pro is a compelling choice at £129.
