49 Full-Size Keys

The step from 37 to 49 keys provides four full octaves without octave shifting. The Mk3 improved velocity response consistency. Channel aftertouch supports expressive modulation with compatible instruments.

DAW Control Surface

Nine faders and nine knobs make it a genuine mixer control surface. Faders map to DAW channel volumes; knobs handle sends and plugin parameters. Combined with transport controls, it substantially reduces mouse usage during mixing.

Analog Lab V

500 preset sounds from Arturia's V Collection accessible immediately. Moog, Prophet-5, Jupiter-8, CS-80 emulations and more, with hardware knobs automatically controlling key synthesis parameters.

Who Is It For?

Producers who want a full keyboard experience alongside comprehensive DAW control. Particularly strong for Logic Pro and Cubase users.

Pros & Cons

✓ Pros

  • 49 full-size keys — proper playability
  • 9 faders plus 9 knobs for DAW control
  • Physical MIDI output
  • Deep Analog Lab V integration
  • Traditional pitch and mod wheels

✕ Cons

  • No polyphonic aftertouch (channel only)
  • Heavier and larger than 37-key alternatives
  • Faders are somewhat lightweight

Verdict

The Arturia KeyLab Essential 49 Mk3 is a comprehensive production tool: 49 full-size keys, 9 faders, 9 knobs, and Analog Lab V — the best-value full-size controller in its class. The lack of polyphonic aftertouch is the only meaningful gap versus the Novation Launchkey 37 MK4.
