A good Reason template is not a huge pre-mixed production. It is a clean starting point with the boring decisions already handled: audio device, sample rate, inputs, outputs, groups, sends, reference track and a few trusted instruments. In Reason, that means starting in the Rack, setting up your common tracks, then keeping the project light enough that it still loads quickly.
Choose the correct audio driver or interface before you create sounds. Set a low buffer when recording, a higher buffer when mixing, and label the inputs you actually use. For MIDI, enable only the controllers you need. Reason works faster when your keyboard, pads or controller reach the right instrument without a troubleshooting break.
Make busses or groups for drums, bass, music, vocals/audio and FX. In Reason, use Mixer channels, Spider utilities, Combinator routing and send effects so the mix has structure from the first loop. Put a simple gain or utility device on each group so you can trim levels before reaching for compression.
Do not fill the template with every favourite plugin. Save the jobs you repeat: a drum starter, one bass instrument, one hook track, a vocal/audio track, a short room, a long reverb or delay, and a reference track. The template should reduce friction, not decide the whole song for you.
